INTRO: Discrimination plays a very active role in any society. Everyone is affected by people’s judgments on their physical appearance or the way they are physiologically composed. Sometimes it is more evident than most, but, in the village of Waknuk, it is a reality that the citizens live by so plays a very significant role in their lives. The laws and regulations in this village are solely based on keeping everything to be in the “true image of God”. Those who are not pure are considered “deviations” and are dealt with unmercifully. Families are forced to turn on each other out of fear of prosecution because those who disobey the law are faced with relentless consequences. In the novel, The Chrysalids, deviations are destroyed for their differences yet their diminutive imperfections do not harm others in any manner.
BODY #1: "Worried about what others may think, we alter the way we act. Anxious about what others may say, we modify the way we think. As we undergo a complete makeover, transforming ourselves into something more pleasing to those all around us, we lose something along the way." David's mother, Emily Strorm is very much influenced by her husband Joseph Strorm. Joseph shows absolutely no sympathy or kindness to his own brother because he is considered a "deviation". Emily had given birth to deviations in the past and was very anguished when her babies were taken away from her. When her sister came to her for help to save her baby, she was cold heartedly turned down instead of being shown any empathy and understanding to her sister's situation. After Aunt Harriet left, Joseph said, "For her to think you might abet her, when she knows you yourself have had to make your own penances twice! To speak heresy in my house too. That cannot be allowed to pass." A defenseless infant that has not harmed anyone should not be punished for a little blemish of the body. She tried to defend her and cried after words out of guilt. Emily only said the things that her husband would have wanted her to say, yet in the end she broke out in tears because her husband brought up the fact that she had also been in the same situation. Altering your emotions and beliefs to make others happy, causes you to lose something along the way, and that is you humanity.
BODY #2: The leaders of Waknuk force the members of their society to uphold the same opinions and values. They are stern on maintaining the same views and use the book of Nicholson's Repentances to justify their actions to keep the race "pure". Nicholson's Repentences is like the bible but people changed it to suit their needs. It isn't even the bible, yet they manipulate it and twist the meaning of it into religion. Blasphemies and offences is what is considered to not be in the true image of God, according to the book. It is told that "Each leg shall be jointed twice and shall have one foot and each foot 5 toes. And any creature that shall seem to be human, but is not formed thus, is not human. It is a blasphemy against the true image of God, and hateful in the sight of God." It was very obvious to the inspector who was physically a deviation but when they found out David, Rosalind, Petra and others were telepathic they got frightened and tried to prosecute them. They tried to justify the meaning of deviations through the book of Nicholson's Repentances but when they discovered that telepathy existed, they immediately identified it as a deviation. How are they to apprehend that they truly are deviations? What if they are closer to the true image than others, but are to naive to look beyond their set opinions? The leaders of Waknuk try to use religion as an excuse to justify their acts and discrimination, yet they are the ones that make the decision about who they consider is a deviation. They control the people out of fear of have a change in their reality they've lived by for generations.
BODY #3: A mother's love for her child is supposed to be stronger than any bond. Parents are supposed to give unlimited love to their child, no matter what faults they have committed. In Waknuk, they consider the Devil to be the father of deviation and blasphemies have their soul touched by the devil. Sophie has been living in secrecy for a long time due to her deviation, a sixth toe. Her parents were people of faith but had different opinions about "the true image", and Sophie having a sixth toe had not wavered their love for Sophie, they did what ever was in their power to protect her. Sophie had existed in society without being noticed and was very kind and considerate towards everyone that knew her and never hurt anyone. It is senseless to say Sophie had been touched by the devil just because of an imperfection to her body. It is not someones appearance that makes them who they are, it is who you are in the inside.
CONCLUSION:
The people of Waknuk are twisted and base their beliefs on a book that has been altered to suit their needs out of fear of change for their way of life. People are forced to have the same beliefs out of fear. Their emotions and judements are influenced by the people around them. You cannot justify your inhumane acts based on a book that isnt even religion. To say that deviations have been touched by the devil even thought they have never hurt a soul is incredoulous. No one should be judged based on their appearence but for who they are.
